The Kind Kitchen
In February 2018 Jason began offering his food to clients through the concept of a “dark kitchen” via Uber Eats.
As his food gained popularity he soon realized that there was a huge demand for vegan food in and around Cape Town. It was later that year, in August that Jason managed to open his first traditional style cafe and deli through crowdfunding.
It was a small 16 seater cafe in Woodstock and they opened their doors to the public on the 1st of September 2018.
At first, he was only offering brunch and a small selection of items for dinner from Tuesday – Saturday every week. The traffic into his cafe was slow to start off with but as the vegan lifestyle concept grew in popularity around Cape Town, so to did his restaurant’s traffic.
With two branches under his belt, Jason’s small “dark kitchen” idea has grown into one of- if not the most- popular vegan-friendly restaurants in South Africa.
The Woodstock branch is situated on 252 Albert Road, Woodstock Brewery, Shop 1. Directions here.
His second branch can be found in the South, on Spaanschemat River Road, Constantia. Directions here.
What To Expect:
There is a huge variety of vegan goodies on the menu, ranging from wraps, salads, vegan boerie rolls, burgers, and some super dooper tasty vegan juices/smoothies.
Here are a few of the things that I have had off the menu:
Avo Hells Yeah Burger- You have the choice between a Beyond Burger (no soya) and the Herbivore burger patty (with soya), then it is topped with their signature sundried tomato almond pesto, on a bed of fresh rocket, spiralized cucumber, fresh avo slices, with the choice of either a sesame, activated charcoal or Tumeric vegan bun. (R135).
Hot Italian Brat– A Beyond Meat hot Italian sausage with fresh cut white & purple cabbage, rocket, mustard, BBQ sauce in a gourmet seeded roll with fries. (R125).
Fungi The Vampire– Pulled King Oyster Mushroom with loads of crushed garlic, sauteed onions, layered with cashew cream on a curly kale base with guacamole, microgreens and fresh tomatoes. It can be served with a salad or on Sourdough bread. (R110).
Cheese Cake Cup Cake– Vegan coconut-based cream cheese, flour, sugar, vegan margarine, desiccated coconut, and mixed berries. (R45)
Their menu is 100% vegan and you can literally taste the love that Jason has when it comes to good healthy food. Everything on the menu (well everything I have had) is “next level amazing”.
Even if you aren’t vegan yourself, I would still recommend visiting one of Jason’s Kind Kitchen’s because the food is really special… and who knows- maybe you end up deciding that the vegan way of life is the way to go.
It definitely deserves a spot in my top 5 vegan restaurants in and around Cape Town.
